Sometimes the journey is more exciting than the destination. It all started when Rémy decided to travel after graduating from university in France. Since his dad was already working in New Caledonia, it was a great place to start. After discovering the hidden beauty of the island for a few months, Rémy was hooked. He was inspired to stay longer and decided to blend work and pleasure. He landed a job in an industrial engineering office 15 years ago and met colleague Mickael Crom, who’s now our NC Country Manager. And as they say, the rest is history.
Success can be found via many avenues, even behind unexpected doors. For some people there’s a rigid plan and for others, following a strict set of rules isn’t essential or desirable. For Rémy, it was clear that he would let his instincts guide him. “I never really made a specific career plan. I let life surprise me and take me where I was meant to be,” explains Rémy. This is how his career began as a technical draftsman, then evolved to an industrial designer and later to his role as a business development manager.
The strong local network in New Caledonia is a catalyst for career ascension. Rémy experienced work all over the island from Noumea to remote areas like Koné, Koumac, Népoui. Throughout his career, Rémy always stayed in touch with Mickael whenever he was in town. They enjoyed catching up over life and work and avidly discussing the absence of innovation needed to push the mining sector to optimize performance. “Every company faces the same challenge to keep things fresh and to embrace change,” says Rémy. “Change is essential for evolution, but it’s incredibly difficult to shift comfortable habits even with the promise of better outcomes.”
As humans, we tend to gravitate towards the best people. It’s in our nature. And sometimes this circle of friends can become valuable for more than just a few laughs. Rémy was working as a subcontractor in Noumea when the company decided to close. His outstanding performance and strong relationship with Mickael were the leading factors that compelled Easy Skill to draft Remy to join the internal team.
Throughout his career, Rémy gained a strong technical engineering knowledge base and established a large local network. He became an expert at translating complex project requirements into roadmaps with action plans to keep individuals on track for delivery. Ironically, this is the winning formula for success as a Business Development Manager. When his last assignment was finishing, Mickael invited him to join the internal crew. Always ready for unexpected twists, Rémy naturally accepted the challenge!
For someone who thrives on novelty and surprises taking on a new challenge can be extremely fulfilling. As a business manager at Easy Skill, the diversity of tasks strikes the perfect balance between technical knowledge, people-orientation, and helping people. Rémy likes to use his skills to give back to the industry now as an advisor: “I’ve seen it all. I’ve experienced so many of the same challenges in the field my clients and consultants find today. It’s extremely rewarding to be able to help people solve the tough challenges and now I can even proactively anticipate issues and solve them before they arise,” he explains.
As an entrepreneurial company, Easy Skill thrives on a steady infusion of new ideas, fresh perspectives, and creativity. While not every idea comes to fruition, when the right timing aligns with growing business needs, that’s when the best ones take flight. Rémy is starting to feel a calling to grow his coaching skills at a larger scale by training others. As one of our consultants Guy Lottaz shared, “I believe there are 3 steps in a professional career: Learning your job, doing your job and sharing your knowledge with others.” We’re excited to help people reach their potential and excited to see where it can take Rémy next!
