Nickel mining plays a vital role in manufacturing batteries necessary for worldwide energy conversion. However, conventional nickel mining causes drastic environmental and social challenges. With these challenges in mind, an increasing number of nickel mines are implementing sustainable and eco-friendly mining techniques, which produce "green nickel".

In this article, we delve into the world of green nickel - its production process, importance in the global energy transition, and potential contribution to a sustainable and environmentally friendly global economy. We'll also explore the opportunities and challenges presented by green nickel production, giving you a well-rounded perspective on this cutting edge technology.

Nickel : the key to energy transition and autonomy

Nickel has become a crucial mineral in the global transition to clean energy. The reason? Its use in the production of batteries powering electric vehicles and renewable energy storage. Lithium-ion batteries, commonly used in both electric vehicles and energy storage systems, contain a substantial amount of nickel. This mineral is also integral to the production of other green energy technologies, including solar panels and wind turbines.

Nickel mining can cause severe harm to the environment and local communities. It can result in water and air pollution, deforestation, and the loss of vital agricultural land. Additionally, it can violate the rights of local communities regarding employment, training, infrastructure, and land tenure.

Is a green nickel more ethical than a regular nickel?

From an ecological point of view, green nickel, also sometimes described as sustainable nickel, is produced by implementing more sustainable and environmentally friendly mining practices, such as the use of renewable energy (to replace coal or oil-fired power plants for example), waste reduction and treatment (in hydrometallurgical processes in particular) and water remediation.

Green nickel mines are committed to working closely with local communities on social issues. They aim to ensure that mining activities benefit the communities with employment opportunities, training, and skills development.

Why is green nickel on the rise and what are the benefits?

1. Reduce carbon footprint: Discover how sustainable energy production, including solar farms and energy storage systems, are transforming the mining industry. Companies are now considering the entire process, from energy supply to transporting ore using hydrogen-powered ships.

2. Protect biodiversity: Discover how sustainable energy production, including solar farms and energy storage systems, are transforming the mining industry. Companies are now considering the entire process, from energy supply to transporting ore using hydrogen-powered ships.

3. Respect the rights of local communities: Green nickel mine leaders prioritize collaboration with local communities to ensure that their mining activities create positive impacts.

4. Reduce risks to human health: Green nickel mines adopt new safety measures to minimise harm to people, animals and plants caused by toxic chemicals and waste management.

5. Meeting the growing demand for nickel: Green nickel can play a significant role in driving the transition to a sustainable economy by meeting the rising demand for nickel in energy storage technologies and electric vehicles, throughout the entire cycle.

Significant obstacles faced in green Nickel production

Producing green nickel is a major challenge that requires the attention of automotive, energy, and mining companies, as well as local authorities and end customers:

1. Higher production costs: Green nickel production involves sustainable and responsible mining practices, thus resulting in higher production costs than conventional nickel production. Naturally, these costs are reflected in the selling price of green nickel, making it less competitive in the market when compared to Indonesian or Filipino nickel prices.

2. Advanced infrastructure and technology needs: Production of green nickel may necessitate substantial investment in specialised infrastructure and advanced technologies, including high-capacity solar power installations, large energy storage units, water treatment facilities, and ore sludge systems.

3. Limited availability of natural resources: To produce green nickel, it's crucial to have access to resources in regions where sustainable and responsible mining practices are implemented and enforced by the authorities. Regrettably, not all countries that mine this mineral, such as the Philippines, Indonesia, and Russia, meet these standards.

4. A development of demand that must grow further: To produce green nickel, we need end customers to demand more sustainable technologies. Without sufficient demand, producing green nickel will not be profitable compared to traditional nickel.

While green nickel production may encounter technical and economic obstacles that could impact its market competitiveness, the increasing demand for eco-friendly products and the need to minimize the mining industry's environmental impact will continue to promote its growth and development in the future.
